Did you know that your ABN is used for more than just invoicing when your renewal is due? Updating your ABN details is easily overlooked with the day-to-day demands of running a business, but it really shouldn’t be.  The Australian Business Registry is used by a number of organisations to contact businesses so it is important that your business contact details are up to date:

  1. Government grants

Keeping your ABN details up to date on the Australian Business Registry, especially your business’s physical location, ensures your business is ready for new government services (i.e. grants) when they become available.

  1. In case of emergencies

Your ABN details are used by emergency services and Government agencies to help identify and contact businesses during times of emergency and potential disaster. For examples of how ABN details are used during emergency, visit the ABR website. Stay safe by making sure your details are up to date:

  • physical business location (not tax agent’s address)
  • postal address
  • email
  • phone number

If you are no longer in business, you should also remember to cancel your ABN. This is easily done online and takes effect immediately.

You can update your details by visiting the Australian Business Register website.
