Best Bites Food Guide and Awards Program

Safe,  healthy,  sustainable, accessible food on the Mornington Peninsula

What is the Best Bites program?

Mornington Peninsula Shire's food awards program – Best Bites -  assesses local food businesses on measures they are taking to provide safe and healthy food; use environmentally sustainable business practices; and provide safe and accessible food premises.

Businesses that meet the requirements will be featured in the Best Bites Food Guide and are eligible for the Best Bites Food Awards.

The program was developed by a steering committee of food businesses, consumers and traders groups and included representatives from Peninsula Health, All Abilities Consultative Committee, Western Port Biosphere Reserve, Monash University, SecondBite, Heart Foundation, Mornington Peninsula Produce and Sustainability Victoria.

Recognition is through the Best Bites Food Guide, the Best Bites Food Awards, and the Best Bites People's Choice Awards.

Best Bites Food Guide

The Best Bites Food Guide is a comprehensive guide to food businesses that deliver excellence across a range of areas. How do you get your business involved? It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

1. Environmental Health Assessment

Each food business is routinely assessed by a Shire Environmental Health Officer each year. To qualify for consideration in the Best Bites Food Guide, the business must achieve the following:

  • Obtain a score of 95% or above in the annual food premises assessment
  • Safely manage food allergens and provide allergen information to customers on request.

2. Nominate

If a business meets the consideration requirements, it needs to be proactive across one or more of the following areas:

  • Access and Inclusion
  • Healthy Eating
  • Tobacco and Alcohol Compliance
  • Waste Management and Recycling
  • Energy and Water Efficiency

Simply complete the nomination form via the link below!

3. Validation

Each nominating food business is assessed by a Shire Environmental Health Officer to validate key criteria across the five areas. Each area validated will ensure the business is listed under that section of the Best Bites Food Guide.
