2018 Best Bites Food Guide & Award Winners

Fork to Fork at Heronswood Dromana have won the Restaurant of the Year award at the Shire’s 2018 Best Bites Awards!

Merchant and Maker McCrae won the Café of the Year closely followed by Blue Mini Café in Rosebud as Highly Commended. The other category award winners for 2018 being:

  • Innovation: La Casa Nostra Deli in Rosebud
  • Aged Care: Opal By The Bay Mt Martha
  • Bed and Breakfast: Sunnyside Up Bed and Breakfast in Rye
  • School Canteen/Child Care: Joint Winners - Balnarring Early Learning Centre and Tyabb Childrens Centre
  • Supermarket: Woolworths in Rye
  • Takeaway: Be Fit Food in Mornington
  • People’s Choice: Shazza’s Takeaway in Rosebud

Finalists in each of these categories were judged by an independent panel to determine the award winners.

Best Bites Food Awards Program

Mornington Peninsula Shire's food awards program – Best Bites -  assesses local food businesses on measures they are taking to provide safe and healthy food; use environmentally sustainable business practices; and provide safe and accessible food premises.

Businesses that meet the requirements will be featured in the Best Bites Food Guide and are eligible for the Best Bites Food Awards.

The program was developed by a steering committee of food businesses, consumers and traders groups and included representatives from Peninsula Health, All Abilities Consultative Committee, Western Port Biosphere Reserve, Monash University, SecondBite, Heart Foundation, Mornington Peninsula Produce and Sustainability Victoria.

Who can apply for a Best Bites Award?

The program involves voluntary assessments of food and beverage businesses and organisations on how well they are achieving the following:

  • Providing of safe and healthy food;
  • Using environmentally sustainable business practices;
  • Providing accessible and inclusive premises; and
  • Minimising harm associated with alcohol consumption and tobacco use

Each food business in the Best Bites guide has been assessed by a Shire Environmental Health Officer for food safety standards and received a score of 95% or above.

Food allergen information is available to customers, and each business has met at least one of the voluntary areas of the program.

Best Bites business recognition

Eligible businesses and organisations are encouraged to register for the program and following an assessment from an Environmental Health Officer (EHO), complete assessment forms for each of the five categories. Businesses and organisations who meet or show how they are working towards achieving the requirements of each category will be recognised as a Best Bites business or organisation for that year. This will include:

  • Business directory and Best Bites directory listing on this website
  • Best Bites certificates
  • Best Bites window displays
  • Inclusion in the Best Bites Food Guide (printed guide), updated annually
  • Recognition at Best Bites events (including Best Bites Awards)
